I would like to comment on the article about Orthorexia. I take offense to those who criticize this very real disease. For starters, there is nothing wrong with eating a healthy diet that may seem overly restrictive to others. However, when those choices are so extreme that they affect your health, that's when there is a problem. My own mother is 5'6 and 90 lbs because she refuses to eat foods that are "unnatural or toxic." This includes artificial colors, fat, sugar, metals, processed foods, etc. Her issues started out about 8 or so years ago as digestive problems. It has now spiraled into Orthorexia. She claims eating fats (even good ones) or junk food makes her feel bad. Of course she feels bad...she hasn't eaten them in forever, and its a shock to her body!!!! Currently, she has little or no healthy fats in her diet. She only eats vegetables, some grains, and a tuna steak every once in awhile. Not even dairy or fruits. It's too hard on her body in her words. She also refuses to see any kind of conventional doctor or take any medication after seeing a holistic doctor after all these years and seeing no results and getting worse. She claims she hasn't tried "the right thing" to cure her digestive problems. Also, whenever my family mentions anything about her eating or a possible eating disorder, she gets VERY defensive!!! My dad and I believe this may have started out as a digestive problem as she says but has turned into a control thing with "pure" and healthy foods...Orthorexia is real.
