There is hope for gluten and lactose intolerance

Enlightenment Growth Certainty Knowledge

My Testimonial

Growth at the age of 18 usually pertains to mental and physical changes of an affirmative nature-one entering long awaited adulthood. This transition is a defining moment, submerge within human mushrooming, that manifests the liberating self within-the adult. A period as such begs for last youthful, teenage, adolescent kicks before the initial throw into survival for personal prevail.. We always look back years later, reminisce of the high school times, of its euphoric, trivially troubled, apathetic and awkwardly clumsy moments with jubilance and just sigh. This sort of ease I was not granted with, for at this time I developed a gluten and dairy intolerance.

Starting with just simple pain, it escalated to chronic visits to the bathroom, metamorphose into crude IBS, simultaneously arousing a type of acid relax which brought nothing but unprecedented pain, discomfort, or simply-terrible depressing life. After many visits to the doctor, pills, pills, and more pills were prescribed. The assumed acid reflux did nothing but add to the issues. My stomach felt destroyed. I thought if I limited my food intake, such as spice, and just eat simple foods like bread symptoms would ease-they only showered. The details are terrible of the pain I underwent every day for about a year.

Turning to the internet and easing of pills helped. Soon I was on some holistic herbal pills (name I do not recall), which seemed to help. After months and months I finally stumbled onto a forum that matched my symptoms and I dove into its contents. Having never heard of gluten intolerance, and having an imbedded humor towards lactose intolerance there was no consideration of it. And then, somehow, by some cosmic infinitesimally small chance, Dr. Ettinger had a meager response to someone’s statement on this ambiguous forum. After reluctant search I reached his website and made an appointment. BEST DECISION, EVER.

At this point in time, I entered his office hopeless and depressed. The chemical spark within was never this lifeless. Following thorough dietary details Dr. Ettinger’s immediate response and conclusion was that I, in fact, was gluten intolerant and everything my body digested was poison for it. Skipping the initial shock, it was quite difficult to cope with such news and to develop an acute sensory as well as filtration system to accommodate my bodily needs. Trials and errors persisted, stumbles and falls waved in. Still, improvement showed. Slowly, but in actuality promptly, my body underwent a speedy rehabilitation and I felt amazing.

Remembrance of such joy, such avid taste of my anatomies equilibrium was elusive. I finally returned to my body’s normalcy. I still took in diary, only to realize a bit later that that too was an allergen. After its elimination I never felt better. It has now been about a year since I’ve been gluten and dairy free. It has been difficult but worth it. Crudely, perhaps in a bit exaggerated manner, I do not know if I would have survived without this simple analysis. I can now have gluten and dairy occasionally and feel no symptoms (if necessary). This is not some requested testimonial, there is no higher truth. Dr. Ettinger possesses healing knowledge for all, and I still joke around that he should somehow replicate himself in the health profession for others to benefit from. If I was a millionaire I would definitely pay him generously. Unfortunately I’m not, and I owe him greatly for all he’s done. I still visit whenever I can just for a check-up.

Best regards,

-Rokas

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Dear patients, friends and family:

I am issuing the following call to action.  As most of you know I am extremely passionate about diet, nutrition and exercise.  The lack of proper diet and exercise in our society is a full-blown epidemic and it’s killing you, your children, your friends and co-workers – way before their time.  I am asking everyone who reads this  post to please watch Jamie Olivers 2010, award winning, Technology-Entertainment-Design (TED) video and if you can, watch his TV series, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, that starts tonight on ABC.  The video is just twenty minutes out of one’s life and may add years to the lives of those that are positively affected by it.

I truly believe it’s never too late to learn something new and it’s also never too late to make a change in your life.  Eating properly is not a time-consuming chore, it’s not difficult and it’s not expensive.

You have all the time in the world, you have all the money you need to buy healthy food, you want to live a long and healthy life and you want the best for your children. I know for a fact that this is true. Remember “Thoughts Become Things” and action is all that’s needed to make these thoughts become reality. Please, just do it!

If after watching the video you have any questions or need help implementing any of  Jamie’s ideas, I am here for you and I want to help.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marcus Ettinger – www.advancedhealing.com

Stress and Our Body – An Integrative Medicine Approach

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Excessive negative stress has become, over the last 25 years, as much a part of our daily lives as eating and sleeping. Excessive negative stress can be physical (chronic illness, lack of exercise, over-exercising, etc.), emotional (losing a job, winning the lottery, etc.), or chemical (bad diet, drugs, medicines, alcohol, pesticides, etc.).

Excessive negative stress is most likely to be the initial predisposing factor in the cause and prolongation of a disease or illness. Again, the greater the exposure and duration to these negative stressors the greater the susceptibility to acute or chronic illness or body dysfunction.

It is also important to note that not all stress is bad or has negative effects on our bodies. Some types of stress are actually beneficial for us and can increase our immune function, overall strength, emotional well being and longevity. The most beneficial form of stress is exercise, especially swimming and weight training. This type of stress can, in moderation, even negate some of the excessive negative stress’ we face.

stress_and_our_body_1When our bodies are exposed to any form of negative stress our organ systems innately responds with what is known as the “fight-flight response”. During this stress induced response, many different and potentially damaging physiological reactions occur. During the initial phase, which can last for seconds to years, digestion and absorption of nutrients are greatly reduced; body tissues begin to break down; the immune system is suppressed; our heart begins to overload and the aging process is significantly accelerated. These are but a sampling of what does occur.

Individuals who are exposed to excessive negative stress may also develop a condition known as adrenal exhaustion. This condition occurs when the adrenal glands work beyond their normal capacity thus eventually shutting down (no more Cortisol, a hormone, being produced). Adrenal exhaustion presents with symptoms similar to those found in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia (see table 1).

Table 1

Tiredness Weakness
Depression, Anxiety 1
Headache
Muscle or Joint Pain Heart Palpitations
Hives, Rash, Eczema 1 2 3
Bowel Disorders
Weak Nails Fatigue
Chronic Illness
Irritability, Moodiness
Water Retention Weight Gain
Dizziness, Vertigo Arthritis
Salt Craving Allergies

An integrative medicine approach for the treatment of adrenal exhaustion or the effects excessive negative stress are identical. First, it’s crucial to reduce or eliminate as many negative stressors (individual stress factors) as possible.

Second, get plenty of rest, at least 8 hours, starting before midnight; engage in regular, but not excessive, exercise; greatly reduce your carbohydrates intake (bread, sweets, pasta, corn and potatoes); increase protein intake; increase fibrous vegetable intake; drink eight glasses of filtered water daily, and perform deep breathing exercises every morning and evening.

Third, nutritional and/or pharmacological support. To determine pharmacological support we must first determine thyroid and adrenal function via blood tests (thyroid panel including both thyroid antibodies and rT3), and (DHEA, cortisol and progesterone) levels. Nutritional support can be in the form of DHEA and/or Pregnenolone (10 – 50 mg daily) and/or glycerrhizin (25 – 100 mg daily – preferably in the morning). These two supplements safely support proper adrenal hormone levels. DMG (vitamin B15) and Siberian Ginseng have both been shown in Russian clinical studies to help regulate the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal axis. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is the initial precursor, along with our LDL cholesterol to our adrenal hormones, whole C complex (Ester-C w/bioflavonoids) is an antioxidant for the adrenal and the highest concentration of vitamin C out side of the spinal chord and brain is found in the adrenal; and potassium are essential for proper adrenal gland function. Adrenal glandular preparations (Whole Desiccated Adrenal (short-term), Drenamin and Drenatrophin PMG) from Standard Process Inc. will also help to support the adrenal glands. These are but a few options that I have used to support the stress response of the body.

Additionally, antioxidants and supportive products like: CoQ10, glutathione, NAC, vitamin E, bioflavonoids, alpha lipoic acid, SAMe, Gabatone (Apex Energetics), L-tryptophan, magnesium and MSM, will also help reduce the overall oxidative burden placed on the body by the excessive negative stress.

With the above knowledge the road to well being and health is now a much shorter one.

22 simple activities you can incorporate into your daily routine to help you create more vitality, energy and creativity

What would you DO if you had more energy?

chiropractic-energy-vitality-creativity

Maile and I (4th of July 2009)

I’ll be 46 in 6 months and my energy level is the same today as it was when I was 18.   My energy level is not a product of super-genetics and I don’t partake in some extreme, hard to follow routine.   I just follow a few SIMPLE rules.  If you choose to, you can have more energy and vitality too!

Here are 22 simple activities you can incorporate into your daily routine to help you (your mind, body and spirit) to create more vitality, energy and creativity.

1.  Take a power nap – Do it in your chair, 5-10 minutes max.  How to Power Nap

2.  Quit smoking – Ex-smokers frequently report an energy boost of 2-3x when they stop.  A good self-help book is, “Leading to a smoke-free life.”

3.  Play to relax – Playing a game keeps your mind working (versus, say, watching TV).

4.  Splash some water on your face – Just letting the cool water hit your face washes off the grime and stresses of the day.

5.  Stand up, stretch and take a few deep breaths – This will take just seconds and will be an instant fix.

6.  Get your world organized – This is the best way to take back control of your time and productivity.  How to get organized.

7.  See the glass half-full and look on the bright side – A generally upbeat and optimistic outlook on life will keep your energy level up. Here is “The Secret” on how to change your point-of-view or view-point.

8.  Take a mini-vacation – Take one day to just do whatever you want.  See the blog of Tim Ferriss (4 hour work week)

9.  Start exercising – Get moving!  Getting some exercise will lift your energy level all day.

10.  Move gym time from PM to AM – Exercising in the AM gets the endorphins flowing, which keeps you happy and productive the rest of the day.

11.  Add more “cardio” to your gym time – This will build stamina and endurance.

12.  Eliminate stress – Stress is draining and pointless, and life is too short to put-up with it (see #7).

13.  Have more sex – Talk about an endorphin rush!

14.  Get a massage – A more relaxed YOU means a happier and more productive YOU.

15.  Get dressed-up – You’ll feel better, more confident and more energetic!

16.  Wear bright, vibrant colors – If you wear bright, happy colors, you’ll get that attitude projected towards you, which will boost your own mood and energy level.

17.  Get a thyroid test from your doctor – If you are chronically fatigued, it may be a symptom of hypothyroidism.

18.  Take a power-walk outside – Getting outside for some fresh air and a change of scenery, with a brisk walk, will get your blood going and will do wonders for your mood and motivation.

19.  Get a good night’s sleep – We need 7-8 hours of sleep to be fully rested.  There is no such thing as catching up on your sleep, so get it enough each night. Also, physiologically speaking, each hour of sleep you get before midnight is really worth two hours.  Try to go to bed between 10:00 and 11:00pm

20.  Have a piece of dark chocolate – If you’re going to have some candy, it might as well be chocolate. We get an endorphin buzz from the chocolates caffeine and theobromine (vasodilator/stimulant).  Lindt Excellence Dark 85% Cocoa is my favorite.

21.  Eat lots of berries – Especially berries that are blue, red, or purple.  Freeze dried acai berry powder, organic goji berries, organic blueberries and red raspberries are my favorites.

22.  Eat smaller, more frequent meals – By eating smaller but more frequent “meals”, you will maintain a steady dose of energy.  Proper food combining can also positively affect your well-being and vitality.

This is not a be-all-end-all list.  If you would like some help, I am always here to help.  If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me (714) 639-4360.  If you would like to have a holistic life coach, one who walks the walk; I can help.  Life moves so fast and before you know it, it will be over.  Embrace each day as you did when you were a teenager.  My grandmother did it throughout her whole life and went to 96 living each day to it’s fullest.  I wish that for myself and all of you.

Vivez la vie pleinement, nous ne vivons qu’une fois – Live life to the fullest, we only live once.
