Orthorexia Nervosa – “When eating healthy becomes wrong”

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Psyco-Prozac

Is ORTHOREXIA  NERVOSA a legitimate medical concern or a result of the over-inflated ego of Dr. Steven Bratman – you be the judge. First a little background: Orthorexia nervosa is a term coined in 1997 by Steven Bratman, a Colorado MD, to denote an eating disorder characterized by an excessive focus on eating healthy foods. In rare cases, this focus may turn into a fixation so extreme that it can lead to severe malnutrition or even death.

Duh! Here’s the scoop: With any action a human can undertake, there will always be someone who will obsess over that action. To create a disease out of feeling passionate about eating REAL food is a little extreme in itself.

The so called experts say, “Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating, even going so far as to: refusing to touch processed sugar, table salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast flavoring enhancers like MSG, soy, corn or dairy products.” Wait it gets better. “This is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.”

OMG! You mean these people are so crazy that they won’t eat MSG, boxed or pre-packaged foods, with a 30 year shelf life. Get these people on Prozac, quick!

Here’s Dr. Bratman again, and he puts it this way, “The defining feature of orthorexia is obsession with eating healthy food and avoiding unhealthy food.” Ouch that’s harsh. “The definition of healthy and unhealthy food varies widely depending on which dietary beliefs the patients have adopted. The usual immediate source of orthorexia is a health food theory, such as raw-foodism, macrobiotics, non-dairy vegetarianism (Ovo vegetarianism and Veganism), Ornish-style very-low-fat diet, or food allergies. Note that, in most cases, the underlying diet is itself reasonably healthy (if unreasonably specific). It’s in the obsessive approach to diet taken by an orthorexic that the disorder lies.”

Un-reasonably specific and Obsessive? (With a thick German accent) “Susan, I need to inform you that your vegan diet is unreasonably specific and an obsession, not based on science but true fantasy. In my professional opinion, eating healthy is not in your best interest. I feel a psychiatric evaluation is in order and may uncover the underlying psychosis causing these delusions.” “Okay doc, can I get out of here now?”

Research suggests an equal numbers of men and women are affected by orthorexia nervosa, and that sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.

That’s another interesting point. Those supposedly affected (suffering) are well-educated and middle-class. This is the group most interested in self-improvement and healthy living. I would have to say that at least 75% of my client base has some degree of this condition. It’s worse than I thought, 7/10 have it.

Deanne Jade, founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders (UK), has some very important data to share, that  just may save you from death due to eating healthy.  Jade says, “There is a fine line between people who think they are taking care of themselves by manipulating their diet and those who have orthorexia. I see people around me who have no idea they have this disorder. I see it in my practice and I see it among my friends and colleagues.”

Why is she bitching? Jade should consider herself lucky for having so many clients and friends who are as passionate as I am, for eating real, unadulterated food and staying away from dead and devitalized food.

Jade also feels that orthorexia is on the rise because, “modern society has lost its way with food.” Jade also says, “It’s everywhere, from the people who think it’s normal if their friends stop eating entire food groups, to the trainers in the gym who [promote] certain foods to enhance performance, to the proliferation of nutritionists, dietitians and naturopaths [who believe in curing problems through entirely natural methods such as sunlight or massage]. And just look in the bookshops – all the diets that advise eating according to your blood type or metabolic rate. This is all grist for the mill to those looking for proof to confirm or encourage their anxieties around food.”

Please, Mrs. Jade, is it really WRONG if someone wants to stop eating meat, or dairy, or processed foods? Is it also wrong for a personal trainer to recommend whey protein powder to help with gaining muscle mass? I don’t think so. Also, the diet books Jade mentions are just theories and are just one piece of a larger pie. Yes, some may get fixated by the new philosophy just learned, but that’s what we do. As humans we move from one idea to the next until we find one that fits just right. The ones that obsess, well, they’ll just keep on obsessing.

Note: My family and I have been suffering from Orthorexia Nervosa for years. I have to admit that, “I as a holistic practitioner, advocate and promote orthorexia nervosa to my clients and friends.” Please keep a sharp eye out. People suffering from this obsession may display the following signs: Planning tomorrow’s menu today; skipping foods they once enjoyed (unhealthy foods) in order to eat the “right” (healthy) foods; feeling in “total” control when they eat the correct diet. As you can see, this condition may lead to severe antisocial behavior or worse – living longer and healthier.

Be Willing To Accept Each Other For Who They Are

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

I just thought it would be a good idea to validate all those individuals who, wholeheartedly, believe in whatever they want to believe in – right, wrong or indifferent. I want to acknowledge them without any evaluation or invalidation for why believe the way they do. I personally believe that, “what’s true to you, at this very moment, is the truth, for you, at this very moment.” Things may change and you may gain more knowledge and understanding, but for right now, that’s the truth.

Throughout our life-time we will be presented with many different and unique ideas, philosophies, dogmas and theories. At first glance they almost all seem to possess some valid and usable data. This is true, but as we become wiser, more educated, more experienced, by being exposed to these new ideas, etc., we begin to cultivate and nurture faith in something, and at the same time we become more biased. An example: UCLA Bruins are better than the USC Trojans. Are they? Some may say that, some will profess the opposite is true. The UCLA supporter has faith that his team is better and is biased against USC. This concept is true in a individual’s view of politics, religion, makes of automobiles, clothes, as well as many other categories of things.

My first paragraph is just meant to make the reader pause and think: Is one (thing/idea) really better, more right or superior than another, or is it just different? Is one (thing/idea) more true, than the other, or is it that one’s personal faith and bias validates one’s thinking it’s so.

I live by the motto: “Never invalidate another or evaluate for another.” Only you know how you feel and I can never, with 100% certainty, know how you truly feel. If you smoke, I will present you with analytical data of it’s ill effects and allow you to decide for yourself, if you would like to continue or stop. Trying to force one’s viewpoints on another will only create resistance and build-up a barrier between to the two parties. Education, education and more education is the only way to increase one’s awareness, and can only be achieved if the student is willing to learn.

The Bottom line here is, be willing to accept each other for who they are and do not try to force your viewpoints on another. No one likes to be made to do something or forced to listen to something or someone that they are not ready for. As my grandmother always said, ” you attract a lot more bees with honey than you do with vinegar.”

Ten Key Points That Are Missing From Obama’s Health Care Reform Policy

Friday, August 21st, 2009

obama

Here are the top 10 key points missing from Obama’s health care reform policy (and often absent from the debate):

#1) Ending the FDA’s suppression of natural cures and safe, effective nutritional supplements.

#2) Initiating a real investment in public education to teach people about how to prevent disease with nutrition.

#3) Ending Big Pharma’s monopoly on drug prices and drug patents (not to mention patents on human genes and animals).

#4) Restoring the ability for local doctors to practice local medicine without being controlled from bureaucrats in Washington.

#5) Cracking down on junk food advertising, soda advertising and pharmaceutical ads that convince people to purchase products that will only harm them.

#6) Banning dangerous chemical ingredients that cause diseases in the first place (aspartame, MSG, sodium nitrite, etc.)

#7) A real effort to improve school lunches and serve food that’s nutritious instead of food that’s cheap and convenient.

#8) Ending bizarre food subsidies on crops like corn that end up making high-fructose corn syrup the cheapest sweetener for manufacturers to use.

#9) Affirming health freedom for parents who wish to opt out of the current system of forced vaccinations and gunpoint-enforced chemotherapy.

#10) Requiring honest food labeling where irradiated and GMO foods are clearly labeled as such.

22 simple activities you can incorporate into your daily routine to help you create more vitality, energy and creativity

What would you DO if you had more energy?

chiropractic-energy-vitality-creativity

Maile and I (4th of July 2009)

I’ll be 46 in 6 months and my energy level is the same today as it was when I was 18.   My energy level is not a product of super-genetics and I don’t partake in some extreme, hard to follow routine.   I just follow a few SIMPLE rules.  If you choose to, you can have more energy and vitality too!

Here are 22 simple activities you can incorporate into your daily routine to help you (your mind, body and spirit) to create more vitality, energy and creativity.

1.  Take a power nap – Do it in your chair, 5-10 minutes max.  How to Power Nap

2.  Quit smoking – Ex-smokers frequently report an energy boost of 2-3x when they stop.  A good self-help book is, “Leading to a smoke-free life.”

3.  Play to relax – Playing a game keeps your mind working (versus, say, watching TV).

4.  Splash some water on your face – Just letting the cool water hit your face washes off the grime and stresses of the day.

5.  Stand up, stretch and take a few deep breaths – This will take just seconds and will be an instant fix.

6.  Get your world organized – This is the best way to take back control of your time and productivity.  How to get organized.

7.  See the glass half-full and look on the bright side – A generally upbeat and optimistic outlook on life will keep your energy level up. Here is “The Secret” on how to change your point-of-view or view-point.

8.  Take a mini-vacation – Take one day to just do whatever you want.  See the blog of Tim Ferriss (4 hour work week)

9.  Start exercising – Get moving!  Getting some exercise will lift your energy level all day.

10.  Move gym time from PM to AM – Exercising in the AM gets the endorphins flowing, which keeps you happy and productive the rest of the day.

11.  Add more “cardio” to your gym time – This will build stamina and endurance.

12.  Eliminate stress – Stress is draining and pointless, and life is too short to put-up with it (see #7).

13.  Have more sex – Talk about an endorphin rush!

14.  Get a massage – A more relaxed YOU means a happier and more productive YOU.

15.  Get dressed-up – You’ll feel better, more confident and more energetic!

16.  Wear bright, vibrant colors – If you wear bright, happy colors, you’ll get that attitude projected towards you, which will boost your own mood and energy level.

17.  Get a thyroid test from your doctor – If you are chronically fatigued, it may be a symptom of hypothyroidism.

18.  Take a power-walk outside – Getting outside for some fresh air and a change of scenery, with a brisk walk, will get your blood going and will do wonders for your mood and motivation.

19.  Get a good night’s sleep – We need 7-8 hours of sleep to be fully rested.  There is no such thing as catching up on your sleep, so get it enough each night. Also, physiologically speaking, each hour of sleep you get before midnight is really worth two hours.  Try to go to bed between 10:00 and 11:00pm

20.  Have a piece of dark chocolate – If you’re going to have some candy, it might as well be chocolate. We get an endorphin buzz from the chocolates caffeine and theobromine (vasodilator/stimulant).  Lindt Excellence Dark 85% Cocoa is my favorite.

21.  Eat lots of berries – Especially berries that are blue, red, or purple.  Freeze dried acai berry powder, organic goji berries, organic blueberries and red raspberries are my favorites.

22.  Eat smaller, more frequent meals – By eating smaller but more frequent “meals”, you will maintain a steady dose of energy.  Proper food combining can also positively affect your well-being and vitality.

This is not a be-all-end-all list.  If you would like some help, I am always here to help.  If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me (714) 639-4360.  If you would like to have a holistic life coach, one who walks the walk; I can help.  Life moves so fast and before you know it, it will be over.  Embrace each day as you did when you were a teenager.  My grandmother did it throughout her whole life and went to 96 living each day to it’s fullest.  I wish that for myself and all of you.

Vivez la vie pleinement, nous ne vivons qu’une fois – Live life to the fullest, we only live once.

What’s your favorite action for getting more energy?  Share it in the comment section here!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

“These are the 5 most common nutritional deficiencies I see in my Orange, chiropractic and integrative medicine practice: Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Omega 3 Fatty Acids (ALA, EPA, DHA). I feel that these deficiencies are not just representative of my local area but are a glimpse of what the world, in general, is experiencing. Below is a brief summary for each nutrient. My ranking of nutritional deficiencies are based on dietary analysis, clinical observation and blood tests.” Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc

foods

1.  Magnesium

Deficiency: 8 out of 10 clients show clinical signs of magnesium deficiency.  The average American diet only contains 50% to 60% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA).  According to Dr. Guosong Liu, half the population of industrialized countries have a magnesium deficit, which increases with aging.

Recommended dosage of emulsified Vitamin D3/Cholecalciferol -  (6,000 – 10,000 IU’s per day for adults and 2,000 IU’s for children above the age of five).  Skin exposure to the sun, 15 minutes per day, is another great way to get adequate Vitamin D exposure.  Note: living in southern California, I only take my Vitamin D during the months of October – the beginning of June. I surf a lot and as soon as my wetsuit comes off and I can get 15 minutes+ of direct sunlight, I no longer need the supplement form. In fact if if I kept taking it I would sunburn within 15 minutes. This is what your body does when the vitamin D level is sufficient. To purchase call 714-639-4360

4.  Vitamin E
