Ultra Lite – Day 17

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

It’s the morning of day (17) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down a total of 10 lbs – 164.5 lbs. This is new territory for me. I haven’t been here or below since undergrad. As a gauge, I graduated high school at 157lbs, though with not much muscle. It will be interesting from here.

I still feel great, energy high and sleeping good. There are no cravings and I have to force myself to eat all the food Ultra Lite want me to. Lunches are the hardest. I fill-up very quickly. It’s not a bad thing, as I will eat the rest an hour later for a snack.

Ultra Lite – Day 16

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

It’s the morning of day (16) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 9.5 lbs – 165 lbs, my marriage weight of June 2003. I would be down more but tried a 24hr experiment that failed miserably.

So, I wanted to see how my body would respond to a cheat day, as I know somewhere along the program a patient may have cheat day.  It might be a wedding or birthday and they will not want to follow the program on that day.  I wanted to see what that would do to me having already been on the program for almost two weeks and having a pretty good diet beforehand.

Friday night I had a friend over and we had some wine (3 glasses of Carol Shelton’s Maple Zin).  My breakfast,  lunch and dinner Friday was per the program.  The only cheat, Friday, was the wine.

2005 Maple Zin
Saturday morning I woke-up and weighed in at 163.5, 1.5 lbs down from the day before.  A ketogenic diet can cause a lot of water loss.  So that combined with the alcohol, I became quite dehydrated. I drank 44oz of water between 7am-12pm before I ever went to the bathroom.  For breakfast Saturday I had a Ultra Lite sanctioned meal.

Now the ultra-cheat.  For lunch the family went to Oggi’s for a pepperoni pizza and beer.  I had three pieces of pizza and a 16 ounce Torrey Pines IPA, yummy.  For dinner we went out with some friends to the Lazy Dog Cafe in Orange.  I had a 22 ounce Stone IPA, braised lamb shank with mashed potatoes and vegetables.  For desert, a little vanilla ice cream.

The let down.  Sunday morning I weighed in at 167.5 lbs., a net gain of 2 lbs (I’m not counting water weight lost the day before).  I went from 163.5 to 167.5 in one day.  That’s 1.5lb of water lost between Friday night and Saturday morning,  back, and 2 lbs of water and food from Saturday lunch and dinner.

By Tuesday I was back on track and lost an additional .5 lb to 165 lbs.

The moral of the story is this: it doesn’t pay to cheat when you are trying to lose weight.  I came back quickly, but I am also starting from a body fat and weight point that most others won’t be at.  A cheat day for them may take a full week to get back into ketosis and back to losing weight.  It’s not worth it and I learned to not try that again.

Ultra Lite – Day 12

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

It’s the morning of day (12) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 9lbs – 155.5lbs.  .5lb more and I will be at exactly where I was at when I got married, in June of 2003.  This is the easiest program I have ever tried and I fell more energetic than I have in years, and I have ADHD.  Tonight I am going to try a little experiment.  Check back later for the results.

Ultra Lite – Day 9

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

It’s the morning of day (9) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 8.5lbs – 166lbs. This is the (7th) day of ketosis, and I lost another .1% of body fat, down to 13.5%. At this point I expect about 1/2 fat loss very 2-4 days, depending on activity level.

The photos above are my beginning picture and at the start of week two on the program. The difference I notice is that my face is thinner, for sure (most men carry weight in their faces. First to come on first to go away). I also notice the love-handles trimming down a bit. I can’t analytically prove this but I am sure I am also losing intra-abdominal fat which won’t be noticeable from a photo, but will be on abdominal measurements. (will post later)

Recap of my first week: The initial change in how I have been eating did result in some gurgles in my stomach, during the day and at night in bed. Days 3-5, my brain was adjusting to the change from blood sugar as a fuel source to ketone bodies and the primary fuel source. By day 6-7 my body had completely adjusted to the smaller meal size and the ketone bodies as fuel. No more gurgles, no more hunger, no more cravings – just a scenes of total well being.

Comments: The Ultra Lite program, as I have experienced it so far, works. America is a country of excesses in every way. The obesity epidemic in both child and adult is robbing our country of its prosperity! It is taking away from our GDP, due to lack or productivity from missed days of work, work comp. claims due to weight related issues, and lack of motivation for working due to weight related issues. My goal is now of an educator, in an effort to save lives and increase to the productivity levels of the clients I will see.

I live by the mantra, “Productivity is the Basis for Morale.” When you’re in a doctors office because of you’re weight, high blood pressure, diabetes or any other weight related issue, you’re not producing. When you can’t move as well as you have in the past because of weight related issues, you’re production level is diminished. You get the picture. The less you do (produce) at work, at home or at play; morale/happiness will be diminished correspondingly. And if your decreased production affects another or others, you will be directly influencing their morale/happiness as well. The trickle-down theory definitely applies here. I don’t want to be mean here, but merely point out the fact that being over-weight affects not only the individual but everyone around them.

Can you imagine if we were all closer to our ideal weight. The production level of this country would be insane. The reduction in lost work hours and medical bills would reduce the national deficit more the any corporate tax break ever could.

I hope this post helps to motivate the ones who find it. My personal responsibility level has increased 10x since starting this program and I am on a mission to help as many as I can get back to their ideal weights, felling youthful and energetic.

Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program – Day 7

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Orange County, CA.  January 24, 2010 – It’s the morning of day seven on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program and I’m now down 8lbs – 166.5lbs.  This is the fifth day in ketosis, and I lost another .1% of body fat, down to 13.6%.  All of my excess water-weight is now off, so I will finally be losing real weight – that’s fat. (more on water weight loss)

Monday morning I will do another set of photos and measurements.  I am definitely planning on seeing some change.  Yes, it’s only been a week but eight pounds is pretty significant weight loss in that short period of time.  I guess we will see soon enough.

I have found that the Ultra Lite program is extremely easy to follow, and even easier, if you prepare for it.  At home we cut-up all our vegetables after we get home from grocery shopping.  The primary vegetables we keep cut are: brown, red and green onions; cilantro; mushrooms; Serrano and jalapeno peppers; leeks; celery; parsley; carrots; cabbage; broccoli and cauliflower.  After washing and cutting, we place the vegetables in separate Ziplock stackable containers.  The only produce that we leave whole is asparagus, Brussel sprouts, avocado, lettuce, spinach, tomato and garlic.   We do eat a lot of veggies!  By doing this, it not only saves time when weighing ingredients for a meal, it also makes it more likely that you will use multiple, health promoting, ingredients.

Here is a yummy salad I just made: four ounces of various meats, spinach, arugula, Napa cabbage, mushroom, avocado, Serrano peppers, EVOO, apple cider vinegar, and a dash of sea salt and cracked pepper.
