Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness.

Effectiveness
The research about chiropractic care is growing. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent studies show that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, along with exercise, relieve neck pain more effectively than medication.

Furthermore, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that an integrated approach to health care — including chiropractic care — results in a 51.8 percent reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43 percent fewer hospital admissions.

You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.

Back and neck pain
Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine.

Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: “They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems.”

Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released.

By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pressure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body. Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health.

Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won’t function as well as if they were straight. “Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability,” he said, “allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.”

Treatment plan
Many chiropractors seek to care for the whole person, from general wellness to disease prevention. They examine every patient, not only for the reason of their visit but also their level of health. After diagnosis, a chiropractor develops a treatment plan.

Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, “This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems.”

Some chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise recommendations, ergonomic and lifestyle counseling and so on. The successful management of chronic conditions may require a combination of these major components. This holistic approach can reduce the need for potentially addictive pain medication or invasive surgery.

Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, the ‘superbug’ behind MRSA, can be a major problem for patients who have a medical implant, such as a replacement heart valve or pacemaker.

St. Jude Accent Wireless Pacemaker

Bacteria are able to form colonies — called biofilms — on the implanted device, which can lead to wider infections such as endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart.

Research led by scientists in the Department of Biology at the University of York has shed new light on how these “biofilm” structures are formed. Biofilms help the bacteria within to avoid attack from the immune system and antibiotics.

Often the only way to tackle the resulting infection is to remove the affected device, which can be a difficult and invasive process.

The team from the University of York, led by Professor Jennifer Potts, included British Heart Foundation-funded PhD student Dominika Gruszka. They found that the bacteria release long, thin protein chains to connect with other bacteria or mesh with other bacterial products. The chains have a highly unusual repetitive structure which could not have been predicted and provides important clues to how they might work.

A similar protein is found on the surface of Staphylococcus epidermidis, another bacterium commonly found in device infections.

Professor Potts, a BHF Senior Research Fellow, said: “This discovery provides an important step forward in understanding how biofilms form. It should help in the development of new ways of preventing infection of cardiac devices by these bacteria.”

Dr Hélène Wilson, Research Advisor at the British Heart Foundation, which co-funded the study, said:

“These clusters of bacteria on implanted devices can be a problem for heart patients because they are very difficult to treat with antibiotics. Often the only way to tackle the infection is to remove the affected device, which can be a difficult and invasive process and lead to further complications.

“This discovery is an important step towards improving our understanding of how these biofilms are structured, which could help lead to new treatments or new ways to prevent them forming.”

Hi Dr. Ettinger,

I forgot to ask you when I was there for my appointment about the cracked skin at the corner of my mouth. It wasn’t so bad then, but it has gotten worse. I have never in my life gotten this, so it’s a mystery. I’ve tried putting some skin repair cream on it, but It hasn’t helped that much. I know there’s a reason why this happens, but I seem to have forgotten. Is it some nutritional deficiency? any suggestions about getting rid of it?

Thanks a lot.

Just a quick update. I have been traveling (to Reno) since Tuesday morning. Could not take my scale with me but did weigh some food Monday before I left. I’ve been following the program as best I can – eating only protein and approved veggies (I never knew how good Romaine lettuce could taste without ANY dressing!). I weighed myself this morning on a digital scale; the result 167!! That’s down 4 lbs, if the scales match. I couldn’t be happier. The UltraLite packets really help. Would you please ask Stephanie to order me more coffee ones. I also would like the chicken soup and the plain packets to use for the recipes.

Thanks so much,

Sandy

Mera RM. Pediatr Infect Dis J. 2012;doi:10.1097/INF.0b013e31824434fec.

Children whose Helicobacter pylori infection was eradicated quickly grew faster than those who were not treated early, according to a study from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Robertino M. Mera, MD, PhD, and colleagues in the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition examined data from 295 school-age children from rural communities in Nariño, Colombia, who were separated into two groups: 150 who were treated for H. pylori and 145 who were not.

Children in the treatment group who tested positive for H. pylori were treated with lansoprazole, amoxicillin, metronidazole and bismuth for 14 days, and they were re-treated if they remained positive 3 months after baseline. Six months after baseline, height and weight measurements were taken, and presence of H. pylori was evaluated; children were measured every 3 months and checked for H. pylori every 6 months using a urea breath test. Children were followed for an average of 3.7 years.

Researchers concluded that children from the treatment group were 2.98 cm taller on average, even after adjusting for other fixed variables such as sex, father’s education and number of siblings. Similarly, children in the treatment group were 1.1 kg heavier on average, even with fixed variable adjustment.

My commentary on the above research:

I have treated well over 100 patients with H. pylori in the last 2 years. Upon CBC evaluation I usually note elevated MCV and lowered MCH. Note: Proper RBC and WBC differentiation and ratios are achieved only when there is adequate B12 and folic acid. When I do run B12 and serum folate levels, I will usually see one or both depressed.

H. pylori infection has been linked to lowered plasma levels of B12 and folic acid. An April 2002 study published in the “American Journal of Gastroenterology” and conducted at the Oita Medical University in Japan tested the levels of vitamin B-12 and folic acid in patients with H. pylori. The researchers performed endoscopic testing on 93 patients, 57 of whom had H. pylori and 36 of whom did not. Researchers found patients with H. pylori had almost 20 percent lower levels of folic acid than patients without H. pylori.

The above is corroborated by the fact that patients with elevated homocysteine levels can experience a reduction when their concurrent H. pylori infection is eradicated. (1)

B12 deficiency has also been linked to decreased maternal weight and gestational weight gain (2), and as early as the 1930 researcher knew that B12 deficiency led to growth retardation in children (3).

In conclusion, it’s my theory that the eradication of the H. pylori infection allowed the children to achieve more thorough digestion and absorption of macro and micro nutrients, B12 and folic acid being just a small part of this. With increased digestion and absorption, proper growth was reestablished.

Dr. Ettinger

Do you have any feedback from any of the patients trying MM?

Secondly – a follow up to that blood work of my dads – he had a bone marrow test and turns out he has the following condition:

“Normocellular bone marrow with progressive trilineage hematopoiesis, erythroid hyperplasia, and no significant immunophenotypic abnormalities.

Peripheral blood with mild macrocytic anemia.”

Then there is the actual bone marrow analysis.

Cellularity …. the normocellular % is 40% which is normal for my age.

Basically something that could be genetic and that he has had for a long time. Conventional treatment is wait and watch… Any thoughts or insight?

W.

W,

I haven’t used “The Miracle Mineral Solution” (chlorine dioxide) it in my practice. I have had a few patients use it on their own, though I’ve never heard any rave testimonials about it. Personally, I’m not going to be using it.

As far as your dad’s diagnosis goes, I have had other patients with similar diagnosis and have referred them out to various integrative medical clinics to receive treatments I can’t perform at my practice.

When you see this type of blood test result you would naturally think leukemia/lymphoma. This would need to be ruled in or out. Another thing I would like to rule in or out is, zinc excess or copper deficiency. Here is a link to what I’m talking about. Hypocupremia (copper deficiency) and bone marrow failure. This is important because if it’s part of the puzzle, resolution can’t occur unless the issue is also addressed.

The common denominator in treatment for all has been monthly sessions of IV vitamin C and ongoing LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone) therapy. The patients I’m referring to have all had a diagnosis of leukemia (CLL mainly) or lymphoma (both Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkins).

Supplement wise has been: alpha lipoic acid (can be added to the vitamin C drip), CoQ10 (100+ mg’s), astaxanthin (8-12 mg’s), Vitamin D3 (2000-6000 IU’s), NAC w/selenium & molybdenum (Now Foods 1000+ mg’s), folic acid/B12 (400 mcg’s/2000 mcg’s) and betaine HCl (200-600 mg’s, per meal) for proper absorption of iron and other minerals.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) Benefits

Cancer Adjuvant Therapy (including NAC, CoQ10, selenium and alpha lipoic acid)

I hope this helps.

Biofilm Basics by Bob Henke of The Post Star

One of the most pervasive life forms is called biofilm. A biofilm is most easily understood by thinking of it as simply a slimy colony of bacteria. It turns out very few bacteria are actually free-living; more than 99 percent live in biofilms.

The nature of these biofilms is exceptionally variable. Some are actually moveable, with the whole group oozing about seeking good habitat. Others fasten to some host or strata and remain there, at times virtually impossible to remove. These little bacteria cities may be composed of a single species of bacteria or there may be several different types living together.

Each bacteria in these aggregations exudes a slippery, sugary substance that forms a case over them all, protecting them from attack by other unicellular animals as well as ensuring that any food produced by the group remains with the group. In some of the larger biofilms, the species involved may have complementary metabolisms, that is one species uses as food the materials excreted by others and vice versa.

Biofilms are found everywhere from on sheer rock faces at the top of mountains to plastic surgery implants. The cause of most childhood inner ear infections is a biofilm and biofilm infections ranging from surgical wound infections to heart valve infections kill more than 40,000 Americans annually, more than die from cancer.

The reason they are so troublesome is because most drugs cannot penetrate the biofilm’s tough exterior. The reason for this and the reason biofilms are so intrinsically dangerous is their ability to communicate and thereby keep all the colony residents working toward a single result.

The nature of this communication is at once fascinating and a critical research need. In simplest form, the communication is chemically based. The individual bacteria pump out streams of chemicals which are varied, depending on the message. Other bacteria receive, make note and take appropriate action before duplicating the chemical sonnet and sending it along. In this way they can change direction, change the permeability of the film to let in nutrients or let out waste products or perform a host of other activities.

One of the key chemical phrases researchers are investigating is called a quorum sensor. This is, simply put, how a bacterium knows it is not alone.

The quorum sensing process works like this: A bacteria routinely produces what is called an autoinducer chemical. When the bacteria in turn senses a great concentration of autoinducer chemical returning to it, meaning there are a lot of other bacteria nearby, the gene for biofilm production is turned on and all members of the cohort begin producing the impermeable covering. Inside an animal, this makes the colony invulnerable to attack from, for example, antibiotics given to cure the sinus infection the biofilm is causing.

If researchers can discover the exact chemical signature of this autoinducer, it may be possible to convince the bacteria they are all alone causing them to abandon the biofilm and travel about, making treatment of the malady much easier and straightforward.

This esoteric-seeming research could ultimately save millions of lives. I wish they could also find something that would make me quit communicating long enough to save mine.

The practice of Dr. Marcus Ettinger

“Give Yourself and Your Loved Ones the Gift of Health”

December Heart Health Check (Open to the public)
Monday, December 5th thru Friday, December 16th

In addition to all of my standard treatments, during these two weeks, I will be paying extra attention to your cardiovascular health – preventative cardiology. From breakthrough lab testing, nutritional protocols and my new MaxPulse device, for screening the cardiovascular/autonomic nervous system*, I have something for everyone.

PS. my October 28th cardio screening sold-out – 30 spots!

*Autonomic nervous system: Part of the nervous system that was once thought to be functionally independent of the brain. The autonomic nervous system regulates key functions of the body including the activity of the heart muscle, the smooth muscles (e.g., the muscles of the intestinal tract), and the glands.

Dear Patients, Family and Friends:

I hope this e-mail finds you all happy and healthy.

Monday, December 5th thru Friday, 16th – In addition to all of my standard treatments, I will be focusing on your cardiovascular health. From breakthrough lab testing protocols, nutritional protocols and my new MaxPulse device, for screening the cardiovascular/autonomic nervous system. “Remember, Prevention is the Cure.”

Why? Because Cardiovascular Disease is North America’s #1 cause of [preventable] death and it exceeds the next four causes of death combined. Also, 70% of our population is either suffering from high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes or high cholesterol/triglycerides. I have the knowledege and ability to handle all of these body challenges – and I want to help!

I want all of you reading this to be tested so we can be sure your heart-health is tip-top. Please take me up on this and be a part of this screening (ages 30 and up). You are encouraged to invite family and friends to be tested as well – it’s that important. I feel this is just another piece of the puzzle in achieving your overall health and wellness goal. As you all know, I want everyone of you to live a long and healthy life and it begins with educating yourself on your current state of [heart] health. Ignorance is not bliss – it’s expensive and painful!

Some of what we will find out from the MaxPulse Assessment:

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – Determines one’s overall health status and autonomic nerve system. “Meta-analyses of published data demonstrate that reduced cardiovascular autonomic function, as measured by heart rate variability, is strongly associated with an increased risk of silent myocardial ischemia (lack of oxygen to the heart w/o symptoms) and mortality (DEATH).”

Differential Pulse Wave Index (DPI) – Overall cardiovascular health.

Eccentric Constriction (EC) – Constriction power of vessels from the left ventricle.

Arterial Elasticity (AE) – Analysis blood circulation and elasticity and resistance of the arteries.

Remaining Blood Volume (RBV) – Remaining blood in the vessels after systolic contraction of the heart.

Wave Type – Aging vascular health indicator.

Mean Heart Rate – Average beats per minute or heart rate.

Arteriosclerosis Progress – 7 pictorial wave types showing typical artery status.

Stress Score – Overall stress health compared to resistance levels.

Stress Levels – Mental stress, physical stress, and resistance to stress.

Changes in pressure, velocity, blood volume, and other indices.

You will receive your MaxPulse results the same day and I will give you a copy to keep. The Max Pulse™ testing device will give both of us a lot of very important data. The test will also help me to assess your nutritional and/or pharmaceutical needs, as well as show the effectiveness of lifestyle changes, recommended treatments and/or additional diagnostic tests that may be needed.

The MaxPulse Assessment is $50 dollars for an individual, $80 for a couple or $25 if added to your regular visit. You can make an appointment with Stephanie or myself @ (714)639-4360. P.S. We have all spent more than $50 dollars on “things” far less important than testing the health of our heart.

Available cardio related lab tests: (all labs are done at my cost) Please call or e-mail if you have any questions related to blood tests. Full blood panels are also available – at cost. My most popular cardio combo*

“A chief cause of the resistance of biofilms is that bacteria on the outside of the clusters have the first shot at the nutrients that diffuse in,” said Pradeep Singh, associate professor of medicine and microbiology at the University of Washington.

“This produces starvation of the bacteria inside clusters, and severe resistance to (their) killing,” added the senior study author, the journal Science reports.

“Bacteria become starved when they exhaust nutrient supplies in the (infected) body, or if they live clustered together in groups known as biofilms,” said study co-author Dao Nguyen, assistant professor of medicine at Montreal’s McGill University.

Preventing pathogenic bacteria from sensing nutrient starvation may present a new therapeutic approach to increasing antibiotic efficacy and preventing drug resistance, researchers claim. A team led by McGill University investigators has found that blocking an active mechanism used by bacteria to respond to starvation by slowing their growth significantly reduces the natural tolerance to antibiotics that infectious organisms develop when nutrient supplies become low.

The investigators work is reported in Science in a paper titled “Active Starvation Responses Mediate Antibiotic Tolerance in Biofilms and Nutrient-Limited Bacteria.” Pradeep K. Singh, Ph.D., Dao Nguyen, Ph.D., and colleagues

Abstract:

Bacteria become highly tolerant to antibiotics when nutrients are limited. The inactivity of antibiotic targets caused by starvation-induced growth arrest is thought to be a key mechanism producing tolerance. Here we show that the antibiotic tolerance of nutrient-limited and biofilm Pseudomonas aeruginosa is mediated by active responses to starvation, rather than by the passive effects of growth arrest. The protective mechanism is controlled by the starvation-signaling stringent response (SR), and our experiments link SR-mediated tolerance to reduced levels of oxidant stress in bacterial cells. Furthermore, inactivating this protective mechanism sensitized biofilms by several orders of magnitude to four different classes of antibiotics and markedly enhanced the efficacy of antibiotic treatment in experimental infections.

10/21/2011 (Yelp Post) Please do not use this company! My name is Dr. Marcus Ettinger and I had the misfortune of using this company to move me from a rental home to our new residence. Not only did the crew claim more hours than they actually put in, they effected almost all of our furniture in a negative way. Our Kenmore Elite dryer (top caved-in), speaker fabric on our 56″ TV (shredded), patio Sunbrella furniture fabric (torn), Mattress (torn), Brushed stainless front to our refrigerator (scratched), $1000 french art picture frame (major scratch)….

I talked with multiple parties, including the new VP – No call back – no apologies – no handling. Not only was the crew not trained, O’ Neil didn’t even seam to give a shit.

bottom-line: if you want to take a chance with the health of your personal possessions, than go right ahead and use O’Neil. On the other hand, if you value what you own – use someone else or take out full replacement value insurance.

Personally, I feel these guys don’t give a shit about me or you. bottom line is they just want money and to get a job done as fast as humanly possible.

If you want to talk with me personally about the nightmare I went through with O’ Neil Relocation, please feel free to call me at 714-639-4360

Comment from Dennis A. of O’ Neil Relocation-United Van Lines Agent 11/18/2011

Was this before or after we paid your claim and you cancelled your credit card defrauding us of the payment for your move?

My Response Back 11/18/2011

Dennis,

Your payment in which you are talking about was on a per pound rate. This is a standard contract rate. I have paper work that shows I was never offered any insurance coverage and the woman who came to our house never went over any options with us. I cashed the check and then filed a claim with AmEx. AmEx automatically credits back my account while an investigation is under way. I have sent them photographs and all supporting documents. It is in their hand now. I did not cancel my card, I am doing this according to AmEx policy.

Why don’t you come over to my house and see the damage your movers caused. I also put my phone number on my post, so if you have something on your mind you should just call – rather than LIE about what I’m doing.

The funny thing here is that O’Neil Relocation got paid, well, to move me and delivered such a shameful product that it confounds me that you are even commenting here. If it were my business, I would have done everything in my power to make it right. Nothing more the SOP was done. So sad because now you have a pissed off customer.

PS. Since you have given me a hard time on this, I’m going to post all of my damage pictures to my blog. It will be something like this -http://www.advancedhea…

I will post all the pics over the next few days. Hmmm, I wonder if it will get any hits?

PPS. I also sent an e-mail, describing the whole situation, to your three top execs: George Hersh, Owner – President@oneilrelocation.com, Rob Sowinski, Executive Vice President – VicePresident@oneilrelocation.com and Bud Potter, Quality Assurance – QualityAssurance@oneilrelocation.com. Do you think I got a reply back from any of them? That would be a BIG FAT NO!

I await with baited breath for your retort.

Move time 8:15am-2:30pm

Audrey,

Please give me a call on Monday when you get in. We had some problems w/this crew and would like to discuss w/you. They were very carless and I would not recommend sending them out to move any of your other clients. This is our third move w/you and the last two went flawlessly. This one was not good! I will go over the details and the damage report Monday.
This is an assumption here but were these guys subcontracted? The last two crews were so professional, SPOKE ENGLISH, and had a high degree responsibility. I can’t say this for the crew that moved us today.
I am bummed that I have to do this but I can’t let this happen to another of your loyal customers.
Sincerely,

Dr. Ettinger
