11 easy rules to follow for a healthier back

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

If after reading this post you have questions regarding alternative medicine, integrative medicine, chiropractic, weight-loss, diabetes or pre-diabetes prevention, nutritional supplementation or how to become a new patient, please feel free to contact our office. Advanced Healing Center of Orange County, the practice of Dr. Marcus Ettinger BSc, DC. Phone: 714-639-4360, E-mail: info@advancedhealing.com, Mail: 630 South Glassell Street #103. Orange, CA 92866.

Orange County chiropractor, Dr. Marcus Ettinger, shares simple techniques to a better quality of life. Below are 11 easy rules, that if followed, will improve the overall integrity of your back (spine and supporting muscles) while at the same time reducing the potential for the development of degenerative arthritis, low back injury and low back pain.

  1. Always warm-up and stretch before exercise or other strenuous physical activity. If you are beginning an exercise program for the very first time or are starting back after a prolonged period of inactivity, begin your exercise program with routine, low-impact exercises. Yoga, swimming, speed walking, or stationary bike riding just 30 minutes a day can increase low back muscle strength, over-all posture and flexibility. Ask your chiropractor for a list of low-impact, ‘core stabilizing’ exercises appropriate for your age. Core stabilizing exercises focus on strengthening, in tandem, the lower back and abdominal musculature.
  2. Don’t slouch when standing or sitting. When standing, keep your weight balanced on your feet. Your back supports weight most easily when curvature is reduced.
  3. At home or work, make sure your work surface is at a comfortable height for you.
  4. Sit in a chair with good lumbar support and proper position and height for the task. Keep your shoulders back. Switch sitting positions often and periodically walk around the office or gently stretch muscles to relieve tension. A pillow or rolled-up towel placed behind the small of your back can provide some lumbar support. If you must sit for a long period of time, rest your feet on a low stool or a stack of books.
  5. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes with supportive arches.
  6. Sleep on your side or back to reduce any curve in your spine. Always sleep on a firm surface.
  7. Drink eight, eight ounces of purified water each day. 75% of the weight of the upper body is supported by water volume that is stored in the disc core; 25% is supported by fibrous material around the disc. (Batmanghelidj MD)
  8. Don’t try to lift objects too heavy for you. Lift with your knees, pull in your stomach muscles, and keep your head down and in line with your straight back. Keep the object close to your body. Do not twist when lifting or when setting the object down.
  9. Maintain proper nutrition and diet to reduce and prevent excessive weight, especially weight around the waistline that stresses lower back muscles. Sufficient daily intake of vitamin D, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus, along with weight-bearing exercise will help promote new bone growth.
  10. If you smoke, quit. Smoking reduces blood flow and oxygen to the muscles and spine, causing the muscles and intervertebral ‘spinal’ discs to degenerate.
  11. Visit a chiropractor for routine check-ups. Keeping your spine and other joints of the body are in proper alignment and moving freely with unrestricted range of motion will reduce ware and tear by keeping the body bilateral and symmetrical; it will also promote unrestricted nerve and blood flow throughout the body

Chiropractic and Auto Accidents – What to Do After a Car Crash

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Buckle-Up Butter-Cup, “The Storm of The Century Arrives This Week!” The weathermen are predicting that Southern California will actually receive a rare phenomenon known as, rain. I know a few of you have seen this stuff before but driving in it, on our So. Cal. freeways, is like blind-folded, bumper cars at a carnival – OUCH!. What is it with some people when there’s a little water on the ground? It’s like everything they ever knew about driving just vanished from their memory. Not to mention – those who will be texting in the rain or day dreaming on their cell phone.

I am sure that all of my clients are amazing, defensive drivers and that a little rain is nothing. What I am not  so sure about is the other million people on the road. Let’s live in present time people! So, I prepared a little write-up just in case of, well, you know.

I will be sending another newsletter in a few days on Low Back Pain, Clinical Nutrition and Bio-Identical Hormones.

What You Should Know If You Have Been Involved In An Auto Accident

Chiropractic_and_ Auto_ Accidents_Orange_California

Did you know that one of the most stressful aspects of living in our modern, fast-paced life is dealing with the problems that arise after an auto accident? Were you also aware that some auto accident injuries are hidden and are seldom detected for months or even years? As a result, two things can occur when an injury is not taken care of properly, or the accident victims settle their case with the insurance companies before getting evaluated from a doctor trained in soft tissue injuries.

… This Could Be A Big Mistake.

Why? Because once you settle your case, you and any passenger will lose the right to have the insurance company pay for treatment if you need it. A good rule of thumb is to be informed of your rights and then make a decision. It is our position that if you were indeed injured, you should get the care you need to get you back to the way you felt and functioned just before the accident.

It is not the responsibility of the insurance company to pay for anything more than that. They are not responsible for pre-existing injuries; only the injuries sustained from the accident. Even if you are just sore, you should get checked out immediately because you may experience pain, numbness, headaches, muscle stiffness, fatigue, and other problems including arthritis many months down the road. Remember, nothing is more important than your health, especially when you start to lose it.

Here’s where the problem begins… Most people who are involved in an auto accident have one thing on their mind: their automobile!

  • “Common questions include:
  • “Who is going to fix my car?”
  • “What will I drive in the mean time?”
  • “Will my insurance rates go up?”
  • “Who is going to pay for it?”
  • And the last thing on their mind is: “Am I Really O.K.?”

Not only are auto accidents an inconvenience and a hassle, a common redundant complaint of auto accident victims is that they don’t feel like their normal selves. You may also be experiencing obvious pains and symptoms like muscle stiffness or spasm, neck pain, headaches, numbness and tingling, back pain, difficulty sleeping, irritability, memory loss, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and many other difficulties. Or worse than that, you may be injured and feel nothing at all.

Either way, did you know that auto accidents can cause post-traumatic osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis can ruin your posture (giving you a slumped or hump back appearance). Osteoarthritis can cause the discs in your spine to degenerate and create scar tissue formation leading to chronic stiffness and the inability to move properly.

As a matter of fact…

  • Most doctors are not trained in the detection of these hidden injuries…
  • If you have been in an auto accident, you need a doctor who is trained in the biomechanics of the human body; someone who treats these injuries every day. In addition, x-rays can be taken to find out if there has been any structural damage. The most highly trained doctor who is qualified to treat this type of soft tissue injury is a Chiropractor.
  • In my office, I can evaluate auto accident victims and make any appropriate referrals to other health care professionals if needed.
  • My primary responsibility is giving you the care if you need it, and submitting the required medical reports to the insurance company, so your rights are protected.

If I can’t help you, I will refer you to a doctor or facility that can.

If you have been in an auto accident recently, there are some important decisions you have to make, and if I were you, I’d make these decisions very carefully.

Q: Should I See An Attorney Before I See My Chiropractor?

A: It is important to get checked out by the doctor first. That way the findings from your exam will allow you the information you need in order to decide if an attorney is necessary. If necessary, we can refer you to a reputable and qualified attorney.

Q: What If My Car Sustained Only Minor Damage?

A: Documented studies done by Charles Carroll, M.D., Paul McAtee, M.D. and Lee Riley, M.D. revealed that: “The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the force applied to the cervical spine (neck) of the occupants.”

In other words, the damage to the passengers is not necessarily directly related to the damage to the vehicle.

Q: If I Need Treatment For This Injury, Do I Have To Pay For It Myself?

A: No, only in very rare circumstances does the patient pay for his care as he goes. My office provides care “on credit” when patients are represented by an attorney. Some car insurance policies have what is called “Med Pay.” This means that medical bills will be paid at 100% up to a certain limit. My office can assist you in obtaining this information.

Using your medical coverage should not raise your premiums.

Q: The Insurance Company Has Been Calling Me And Wants To Settle, What Should I Do?

A: Do not sign or settle until you have had us evaluate your injury for you. If you settle before your injury is fully resolved, you will be completely on your own and will have to pay out of pocket for your care.

Q: I’ve Been To The Hospital And My Medical Doctor, Do I Really Need to See a Chiropractor?

A: You need a doctor who focuses in the treatment and diagnosis of auto accident injuries. Usually hospitals will check vital signs, make sure there are no life-threatening conditions and release the patient with pain relief medication. They normally do not treat the underlying improper musculoskeletal biomechanics that can and often do lead to future pain. If you are still having problems, you should get a second opinion.

If your M.D. has given you drugs for pain or inflammation, you must understand that these drugs do not correct structural or soft tissue damage. There are special therapies designed for that, and I offer these at my office.

Q: Does Your Care (Chiropractic or Trigger Point Therapy) Hurt?

A: Absolutely not. The care is very gentle and quite soothing. Most patients can hardly wait to get their care.

Q: Is The Care Safe?

A: Yes, extremely. Particularly when compared to the side effects from medication.

If you, a loved one, friend or co-worker is involved in an car accident, please call as soon as possible to make an appointment. (714) 639-4360

Orange county chiropractor, plus weight-training, is just what the doctor ordered for the relief of low back pain

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

spineA study just completed at the University of Alberta and presented at the American College of Sports Medicine determined that, “weightlifting enhanced quality of life for back-pain patients by as much as 28%.” Also, the quality of life, defined as general physical and mental well-being, rose by as much as 28%.

Did You Know?

  • About 80% of North Americans suffer from lower back pain.
  • 67% of Americans over the age of 21 are over-weight, and 45% of them are satisfied with their body weight.
  • Estimates are that by the year 2030, 86% of Americans over the age of 21 will be over-weight.
  • 45 percent of Americans are satisfied with their body weight.
  • Nearly half of Americans feel better on the days when they exercise.
  • Nearly 1 in 10 Americans are aware the USDA recommends 30 minutes of physical activity.
  • Only 50% of Americans know that in order to lose one pound, you must burn 3,500 calories more than you eat.
  • 6 out of every 100 American adults get 30 minutes of exercise a day.
  • 2 out of 10 Americans exercise three to four times per week.
  • 2 out of 10 Americans walk or bike instead of taking transportation.
  • 4 out of 10 Americans take the stairs whenever possible.
  • 3 out of 10 Americans regularly park their cars farther from their destination to get in extra walking.

Key points from the study including my observations from 20 years of treating low back pain in my Orange, CA chiropractic office and 25 years training with weights:

“Strengthening only one part of the body will not cut it.” Strengthening every muscle group of the body including the so-called ‘core muscles’ is the best way to stabilize the spinal column and prevent injury to muscles and joints.

“Anyone with neck or low back pain should consult a chiropractor or physician before proceeding with an exercise plan.” Pain can come from many sources and an evaluation beforehand will help to determine if an exercise plan is right for you.  A chiropractor is specifically trained in these areas and the most competent type of doctor to make this determination.

“Exercising is counterintuitive based on how you feel,” Kell (one of the researchers) says.  “It hurts, so you want to stop.  We associate pain with something being wrong or getting worse, so we think we should rest more often. But really what happens if they get up and exercise with low back pain, the joints loosen up and feel better.”

“If you continue to strengthen the body, the pain will subside, either substantially or to a small amount, but it will subside.” Other factors that will facilitate quicker reduction in pain or a decreased chance of back injury are:

  • Reducing excess weight.
  • Receiving routine chiropractic adjustments.
  • Increase the amount of magnesium and potassium in your diet by eating more green-leafy vegetables.
  • Drink at least two quarts of water per day.
  • Get a new bed if the one you have is too old or is not supportive.

“Aerobic Exercises such as jogging, walking on a treadmill or using an elliptical machine to ease low back pain, has only a minimal benefit.” Aerobic exercise should be part of any comprehensive work-out program and should be preformed 20-30 minutes three times per week, preferably just before the weight-training portion of the work-out.

Please share what you do to help when you experience back pain.

Health Insurance or No Health Insurance?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

health-insurance1Commentary: Is it better for otherwise healthy Americans to have health insurance for themselves and their families or is it better for them to save those hard-earned premium, co-pay and deductible dollars, and use them as they see fit?

Let’s look at the facts:

Lets’ say that an individual goes uninsured till he/she reaches thirty. At that point he/she gets married and starts a family. Now 32 with a baby on, the way the couple decides to purchase health insurance. With a yearly family deductible for three family members, in their age bracket, the family will pay a insurance premium of about $800.00 per month ($9,600 per year). The first $1,000 (deductible) comes out of their pocket, followed by a $20 co-pay for office visits and a 20% co-insurance on all procedures.

Believe it or not, the average healthy American may never use their insurance, other than for their routine yearly physical. If that’s the case then they will never meet their yearly deductible and those visits will be out-of-pocket. Example: the first year the family (above) who is now having a baby will pay $9,600 for the year of insurance, $1,000 for the deductible (for having the baby – all visits and birth), and after the deductible is satisfied, then 20% co-insurance for all visits and procedures. In the first year it will cost the family over $11,000 to have health insurance. Note: I paid cash for all midwife visits, ultrasounds, blood tests and birthing. The total cost for my daughter to be delivered was $6,500,

The baby is now born and it’s a new year’s worth of premiums. This family is otherwise healthy. The family takes proactive actions to take care of themselves. They get their teeth checked once a year ($100 each), husband and wife both get a yearly physical with blood tests ($400-600 for both), and the baby gets well-baby visits and immunizations ($400). At this point the deductible has been met but the insurance is not needed for the remainder of the year. Yearly cost: with slight premium hike its $11,000.
