Ultra Lite – Day 9

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

It’s the morning of day (9) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 8.5lbs – 166lbs. This is the (7th) day of ketosis, and I lost another .1% of body fat, down to 13.5%. At this point I expect about 1/2 fat loss very 2-4 days, depending on activity level.

The photos above are my beginning picture and at the start of week two on the program. The difference I notice is that my face is thinner, for sure (most men carry weight in their faces. First to come on first to go away). I also notice the love-handles trimming down a bit. I can’t analytically prove this but I am sure I am also losing intra-abdominal fat which won’t be noticeable from a photo, but will be on abdominal measurements. (will post later)

Recap of my first week: The initial change in how I have been eating did result in some gurgles in my stomach, during the day and at night in bed. Days 3-5, my brain was adjusting to the change from blood sugar as a fuel source to ketone bodies and the primary fuel source. By day 6-7 my body had completely adjusted to the smaller meal size and the ketone bodies as fuel. No more gurgles, no more hunger, no more cravings – just a scenes of total well being.

Comments: The Ultra Lite program, as I have experienced it so far, works. America is a country of excesses in every way. The obesity epidemic in both child and adult is robbing our country of its prosperity! It is taking away from our GDP, due to lack or productivity from missed days of work, work comp. claims due to weight related issues, and lack of motivation for working due to weight related issues. My goal is now of an educator, in an effort to save lives and increase to the productivity levels of the clients I will see.

I live by the mantra, “Productivity is the Basis for Morale.” When you’re in a doctors office because of you’re weight, high blood pressure, diabetes or any other weight related issue, you’re not producing. When you can’t move as well as you have in the past because of weight related issues, you’re production level is diminished. You get the picture. The less you do (produce) at work, at home or at play; morale/happiness will be diminished correspondingly. And if your decreased production affects another or others, you will be directly influencing their morale/happiness as well. The trickle-down theory definitely applies here. I don’t want to be mean here, but merely point out the fact that being over-weight affects not only the individual but everyone around them.

Can you imagine if we were all closer to our ideal weight. The production level of this country would be insane. The reduction in lost work hours and medical bills would reduce the national deficit more the any corporate tax break ever could.

I hope this post helps to motivate the ones who find it. My personal responsibility level has increased 10x since starting this program and I am on a mission to help as many as I can get back to their ideal weights, felling youthful and energetic.

Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program – Day 5

Orange County, CA.  January 22, 2010 – It’s the morning of day (5) on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program and now down 7.5lbs – 167lbs.  This is the third day of being in ketosis, and I lost another .3% of body fat.  Now down to 13.7%.  I just got a new body fat tester, more accurate and I can see 10ths of a percentage change.

I do have to admit; last night my stomach was rumbling a bit for the first hour and half.  I ate dinner at 5:00pm and went to bed at almost 11:00pm, so not much in my stomach.  It passed and I slept great until the torrential down-pour started around 12:30am.   No worries though; I fell back to sleep and didn’t wake-up until 6:30am.

Being in a state of ketosis is pretty amazing.  I think that this is the key to losing weight or if you need to function at a higher level for a while.  The weight drops quickly and the clearness one feels in the head is something you have to personally experience to understand what I am talking about.

I look forward to being down to 10% body fat, which is coming real soon.

My Ultra Lite dinner tonight.  BBQ New York strip with cracked pepper, crushed garlic and sea salt.   To accompany the steak I braised some Brussel sprouts and asparagus and finished them off with a little melted butter, garlic and sea salt.  I also made a simple dipping sauce for the steak from sugar free Dijon mustard and horse radish.

I can’t believe that people find it so hard to stick to a diet.  This meal was filling and tasted great.  Yes, I do miss my wine but that will come soon enough.

Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program – Day 4

Orange County, CA.  January 21, 2010 – It’s the morning of day four on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program and now down 6lbs – 168.5lbs.  This is the second day of ketosis, and as expected, I lost 1% body fat.   Now down to 22% (home scale) 14% *(Omron fat-loss monitor).   If this keeps up, I’ll be to my goal weight and BF% in no time at all.   The best part is that I feel great and I am eating nutritious, real food.

The great thing about being in ketosis is the natural high you get.   Everything is very clear and my clarity of thought is  much better.  The reason being is that Ketones function as “brain fuel.”   The major role of ketone bodies, their real name, is to supply an alternative (to glucose) fuel for the brain in situations where there are little or no carbohydrates available  from food.  Use Ketosis to Train Your Brain to Sleep Less

I know I can’t keep this up forever but realistically, I will only stay in ketosis until my weight-loss goal is reached.

*From now on I will only be using the Omron to monitor my body fat loss, as it is far more accurate.   I will check the home scale for percentage loss accuracy.

This what we had for our Ultra Lite dinner tonight.  Baked salmon with a Dijon mustard glaze, a top a bed of spinach (I added sliced Serrano pepper slices to mine).  This was way better than I ever thought it would be.  The acidic  Dijon mustard glaze balances out the fattiness of the salmon, perfectly.  The greens braise in the salmon fat, which makes them taste killer.  As I will say often, I miss my wine with dinner but I know this is worth it and it won’t be long until I can have a glass.

I think when I am done with this initial phase I will limit my wine with dinner to the weekend only.  Five days of eating very well and a little leeway on the weekends, seems like a great balance.  How else will I be able to maintain 10%  or less body fat?

Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program – Day 3

Orange County, CA.  January 20, 2010 – Morning of day three on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program and I’m already down 4lbs – 170.5lbs. This is the first day of *ketosis as well, so now I expect the body fat to start dropping too.

*Ketosis is determined by dipping a ketone stick in to a specimen of morning urine.  The state of ketosis means that I am now burning body and liver fat, and one of the metabolic products of that reaction is a ketone body.  As long as I am in ketosis I will continually be burning fat, which will provide my body and brain the energy it needs to function. Most of the time we will burning glucose (blood-sugar) which comes from the carbohydrates (bread, corn, pasta, potato, rice, sugar…) we eat. The best part it that weight-loss comes from body fat reduction, not water or muscle loss.

Today I added my first supplement, Spectramin.  Spectramin is a comprehensive multi-mineral supplement.  The main reason for this addition is that the switch from a high-carbohydrate to a low-carbohydrate, “ketogenic” diet is fairly rapid, thus my body may temporarily go through a period of adjustment.  During this adjustment my body may require extra minerals, due to my body’s releasing excess fluids that were stored during high-carbohydrate eating.

In the first week or two of being on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program, I expect a great deal of the weight-loss to come from elimination of retained water. Research suggests that the presence of higher than normal levels of insulin in the blood causes excess water retention in the body. This is due to the fact that sodium will be retained by the kidney’s and water will be stored to buffer the excess sodium. This process results in (water-retention, swelling, edema, puffiness) and is a primary cause of high blood pressure. This is why doctors will prescribe diuretics to patients with hypertension. Logically, wouldn’t be smarter to get the insulin levels down by reducing the patients carbohydrate intake?

The initial water loss is only a short-term effect and is entirely separate from the general weight loss produced through the loss in excess body fat.

January 18, 2010 – This is day one on the Orange County UltraLite (weight-loss) Program that my wife and I will be doing, for the next five weeks.  My going on the Ultra Lite program will serve two purposes: one, I am an  UltraLite  (weight-loss and pre-diabetes) certified practitioner and I administer this program in my Orange County integrative medicine practice.  Two, is that I want to know every the in and out, so be better prepared to answer all questions that may come-up in regard to this program.  I have never been one to just talk the talk.  Follow me on my five week program.
