It’s the morning of day (25) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down another .5lb, 12lbs total – 162.5lbs. I am totally amazed that I could drop 12lbs in just 25 days, and this is for a guy who really didn’t need to lose weight. I know people are looking for fads like “HCG injections 4 weight loss.” This is for life folks – NOT A FAD!

Ultra Lite – Day 25
Thursday, February 11th, 2010Ultra Lite – Day 23
Thursday, February 11th, 2010It’s the morning of day (23) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 11.5lbs – 163lbs. My body fat is down to 13%. I have till March 5th to see where I’ll end-up. Then 3 days of wine tasting in Sonoma, followed by 7 days at Dreams in Puerto Vallarta. Ultra Lite when I get home.
Ultra Lite – Day 19
Friday, February 5th, 2010It’s the morning of day (19) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 11 lbs – 163.5 lbs. Eleven pounds may not sound like that much until you try walking around with two five pound bags of sugar, for 8 hours. Try it for just 10 minutes and see how you feel.

My mom says it's just baby fat.
Here is an interesting observation: Since I’ve been on this program I have been sharing my story with everyone I know, meet or have as a friend on the net. You know how many people have said, “you know, I would like to lose a few pounds too and get back into shape?” One! And she signed up today to complete the program. My conclusion, which may be right or wrong, but I feel it’s more correct than not – most people are satisfied with their current weight and level of health. Either that or they have gotten so used to how they look and feel that change is not in their reality.
You would think that most people would want to live a long and healthy life, and take proactive steps to guarantee that it would be that way, when they’re seniors. For some reason it’s not working out that way. As an example: Most of my friends are in there mid-forties and have known me for over 20 years. The number of those friends that has asked me for advise or help, one or two. Now maybe it’s because they think of me more as their buddy, than as a doctor, but they know what I do, how I look and how I act. So, really there are no excuses.
That’s my two cents for the day.
Ultra Lite – Day 17
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010It’s the morning of day (17) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down a total of 10 lbs – 164.5 lbs. This is new territory for me. I haven’t been here or below since undergrad. As a gauge, I graduated high school at 157lbs, though with not much muscle. It will be interesting from here.
I still feel great, energy high and sleeping good. There are no cravings and I have to force myself to eat all the food Ultra Lite want me to. Lunches are the hardest. I fill-up very quickly. It’s not a bad thing, as I will eat the rest an hour later for a snack.
Ultra Lite – Day 16
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010It’s the morning of day (16) on the Ultra Lite program and I’m now down 9.5 lbs – 165 lbs, my marriage weight of June 2003. I would be down more but tried a 24hr experiment that failed miserably.
So, I wanted to see how my body would respond to a cheat day, as I know somewhere along the program a patient may have cheat day. It might be a wedding or birthday and they will not want to follow the program on that day. I wanted to see what that would do to me having already been on the program for almost two weeks and having a pretty good diet beforehand.
Friday night I had a friend over and we had some wine (3 glasses of Carol Shelton’s Maple Zin). My breakfast, lunch and dinner Friday was per the program. The only cheat, Friday, was the wine.

Saturday morning I woke-up and weighed in at 163.5, 1.5 lbs down from the day before. A ketogenic diet can cause a lot of water loss. So that combined with the alcohol, I became quite dehydrated. I drank 44oz of water between 7am-12pm before I ever went to the bathroom. For breakfast Saturday I had a Ultra Lite sanctioned meal.
Now the ultra-cheat. For lunch the family went to Oggi’s for a pepperoni pizza and beer. I had three pieces of pizza and a 16 ounce Torrey Pines IPA, yummy. For dinner we went out with some friends to the Lazy Dog Cafe in Orange. I had a 22 ounce Stone IPA, braised lamb shank with mashed potatoes and vegetables. For desert, a little vanilla ice cream.
The let down. Sunday morning I weighed in at 167.5 lbs., a net gain of 2 lbs (I’m not counting water weight lost the day before). I went from 163.5 to 167.5 in one day. That’s 1.5lb of water lost between Friday night and Saturday morning, back, and 2 lbs of water and food from Saturday lunch and dinner.
By Tuesday I was back on track and lost an additional .5 lb to 165 lbs.
The moral of the story is this: it doesn’t pay to cheat when you are trying to lose weight. I came back quickly, but I am also starting from a body fat and weight point that most others won’t be at. A cheat day for them may take a full week to get back into ketosis and back to losing weight. It’s not worth it and I learned to not try that again.
