In America, we have a healthcare system known as Obamacare. Under Obamacare, we have a system that that treats sickness, symptoms, and disease. Our so called healthcare is actually sick care or disease care, not health care. Let’s take a look at the differences between true healthcare and Obamacare’s sick care.
Healthcare vs Sick Care
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines HEALTH as, “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
CARE is defined as, “the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.
The HEALTHCARE industry self-defines the term “HEALTHCARE” as, “the prevention or treatment of illness by doctors, dentists, psychologists, etc.
Our healthcare system as we know it does not “PREVENT” or “TREAT” illness or disease. I hate to generalize, but doctors as a group, including chiropractors, mainly treat symptoms and offer very little in the way of prevention. As someone in the trenches, I don’t believe it’s the individual doctor’s fault. The education us doctors receive leans hard in the direction of symptom care. So most doctors just do what they are taught. Luckily, some wake-up and discover true HEALTHCARE.
The definition of PREVENTION is, to stop something before it happens. Does our HEALTHCARE system PREVENT the loss of physical, mental, and social well-being, as well as disease or infirmity? It surely does not.
PREVENTION, in traditional medical terms, means performing so-called routine screenings such as limited blood tests, blood pressure, mammogram, and colonoscopy. Now if the screening does not find anything, you come back next year – you’re healthy, right? That’s like saying, “if you have a pulse, you’re alive.” There is alive and then there is ALIVE! Now, if they do find something, they’ll say, “we PREVENTED” something (doctors patting themselves on the back). But if they PREVENTED, why are their next words, “now it’s time to “TREAT”. TREAT with a scalpel, radiation, chemotherapy or pharmaceutical. Yes, this is our HEALTHCARE systems definition of PREVENTION and TREATMENT.
At best, traditional PREVENTION and TREATMENT will merely try to stop disease or illness from progressing, once the disease or illness has been identified. This by definition should be called DISEASE-CARE or SICK-CARE – Not HEALTHCARE. Prevention and treatment, as a general rule, have never come from or will ever come from a prescription pad or the act of taking a medication. Also, it does not come from the tip of a scalpel or the removal of a needed organ. I give our HEALTHCARE systems version of HEALTHCARE a grade of D.
True HEALTHCARE by definition is, “providing what is necessary, to create within any individual, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, including the prevention and holistic treatment of disease or infirmity, if it may arise.” (Holism. Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts).
What makes up true HEALTHCARE? It is made up of three components: the individual, healthcare providers, and institutions.
What to look for in a true HEALTHCARE provider: The healthcare provider should utilize a functional or integrative approach. This means that he or she will treat you from top to bottom, inside and out, past and future. He or she will utilize available diagnostic tests, traditional or non-traditional, to predict or treat, as well as all methods needed to bring back or maintain optimum health. Examples of these methods can be found here – The 15 All-Time Best Anti-Aging Techniques
The individual, that’s you, will start to take responsibility for your body. Why do some people let a once healthy body, fall apart? I’ve been asking myself that question for over 27 years and I still don’t have the answer. Here are some simple steps that can be taken to move forward or reverse any negative health trend.
One of the best ways to create HEALTH and true HEALTHCARE is through our institutions of learning – schools – starting at the pre and elementary school level. We do this through real education, not dogma or propaganda. I know this is merely a pipe dream but if our schools put in or back in, daily physical education, home economics, healthy school lunches, nutrition class… we would see a downward shift in disease statistics within a generation. We would also see our children learning about health, personal responsibility and then growing up to be better doctors, administrators and more health conscious parents.
Conclusion: Your HEALTH first starts with the decision, that your personal HEALTH is important. To the degree that you value your HEALTH and well-being is to the degree you will take steps to be healthy. Once you have made that decision, action steps will need to be taken to determine a baseline of where your health level is at. Based upon the results of your diagnostic tests, a plan of action can be created for correction, maintenance or prevention. Lastly, following the plan and following-up with routine diagnostics will keep your health moving in a positive direction. If these steps are followed, true health, vitality, and well-being will be the reward.
